The skin, our largest body part

The skin covers an area of ​​about two square meters. It is made up of three layers: the epidermis, the dermis and the hypodermis. The epidermis is the outermost layer, the one we see directly, and consists of flat cells called squamous epithelium. Between the epidermis and the dermis is the basement membrane, where cells divide to replace damaged skin cells in the outer layer. The dermis, which lies below the epidermis, consists of connective tissue with collagen and elastin. As we age, the amount of these substances decreases, making the skin less elastic and wrinkled. Too much sun can damage the elastic fibers, which accelerates the aging of the skin. That is why it is a good idea to use sunscreen with a high factor. The dermis also contains sensory organs, hair follicles, nerves, sebaceous glands and sweat glands. The dermis then transitions into the hypodermis, the deeper layers, which consist of loose connective tissue and fat cells. The hypodermis acts as thermal insulation, shock absorbers and a fat reserve.
